And then some: Tom Salomone on client relationships

Tom Salomone was guest speaker at the Real Estate Business Owners of South Africa (REBOSA) on 10 August. He is the 2016 president of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), America’s largest trade association representing 1.2m realtors involved in residential and commercial real estate.

Drawing on more than 40 years of experience as a licensed real estate agent, realtor and broker/owner, Salomone offered the following insights about why estate agents need to work harder at their craft and at building relationships with their clients:

1. Average people do what is expected of them for the time expected of them. An average person goes to work from nine-to-five and does a good job. In relationships, average people remember birthdays and anniversaries – they do what is expected of them. Great people do that – #andthensome.
2. The person who is best in your company probably does a little bit more, whether it’s phone calls or marketing. That sports team, those Olympics kids, they practice more than anybody else. In relationships, the best partners don’t wait for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. They’re doing great things all year round.
3. As agents the things you do in your communities, you do out of your heart. That’s who real estate people are and what they do. There has never been a profession where I’ve seen more people do more for their communities. If there is anything that will make you the best in your industry, live your life and your careers with these words: #andthensome.
