Scandal continues to plague America’s NAR

It might be its largest association of its kind, but it seems that the NAR (National Association of Realtors) is struggling to avoid scandal. In August of 2023, the then NAR president, Kenny Parcell, resigned after a New York Times article detailed accusations of sexual harassment against him by both staff and members.

Tracy Kasper was appointed in his stead, stating, “We are looking to make lasting and positive change and to do so as quickly as possible”.  It would seem that that desire was short-lived as Kasper resigned with immediate effect less than six months later due to a blackmail threat.

Shock resignation

NAR President Tracy Kasper informed NAR’s Leadership Team that she recently received a threat to disclose a past personal, non-financial matter unless she compromised her position at NAR. She refused to do so and instead reported the threat to law enforcement. Ms Kasper felt that, in the circumstances, it was best for the organisation that she steps down. The Leadership Team is deeply concerned about any attempt to undermine its governance and, as a result, is taking steps to protect the organisation’s integrity.

Ms. Kasper said, “As president and a long-time member of NAR, I always have put the interests of NAR first. As a result of the recent threat and given the significance of this moment for myself, my family, and the organisation, it is time for me to put the interests of NAR first again. So, with a mix of gratitude and a heavy heart, I submit my resignation as your president, effective immediately. Doing so gives our leadership team the ability to take the reins and forge forward in effecting the change that we all have worked so hard over the past few months to begin. I know I leave our members, staff and association in good hands.”

New president-elect, Kevin Sears appointed

NAR appreciates Ms. Kasper’s service and years of dedication to the association, particularly her commitment to advocating for homeownership for all. President-elect Kevin Sears will immediately step into the role of NAR President. NAR’s work to strengthen the organisation continues uninterrupted, and NAR remains focused on leading our industry forward and ensuring transparent and competitive marketplaces for American home buyers and sellers.
