It is a widely known fact that the acting CEO of the PPRA, Thato Ramaili, took on the role under extremely trying circumstances, inheriting an institution left in disarray by the previous regime. The PPRA is beset with a defunct IT system and severe personnel challenges. PPRA Chairperson, Steven Ngubeni, referred to this during his speech at the NAR Seminars held in March, stating that disciplinary measures had been taken against several employees and that further investigations were ongoing. It fell to Ms. Ramaili to see the process through.
“Apart from the IT issues, which have caused serious problems for thousands of estate agents, many have also had the unfortunate experience of encountering staff who through either incompetence or a complete disinterest have failed to provide any kind of professional service. It is our belief as the Rebosa that the resolution of these personnel issues is long overdue, and to be supported”, says Jan le Roux, Rebosa CE.
In this climate, annual wage negotiations are underway at the PPRA. As is often the case with wage negotiations, it appears that the PPRA and NEHAWU disagree on the proposed increase, with NEHAWU members having gone on strike.
“While employees are allowed to counter salary offers, it appears that staff members participating in the strike have reportedly made multiple, public personal attacks using uncouth language against Ms. Ramaili. One wonders how these colleagues will report to their acting CEO once the dust has settled, which it inevitably will. If anything, these actions, which are completely unwarranted and unprofessional should lead to further disciplinary measures”, le Roux believes.
“The PPRA plays a vital role in the real estate industry, and at a time when agents are beleaguered with financial and operational challenges, needs to not only function but outperform. Rebosa, as a major voice for the industry, supports the necessary, albeit unpleasant, work Thato Ramaili is performing and lends her its full support”. “We are hopeful that stability will be restored at the PPRA soon and support the resolution of these issues in a timely manner, ensuring that the PPRA is able to deliver on its mandate”, shares Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, NPPC chairperson.
